Birthstones have been around since biblical times. Moses had a brother named Aaron, often known as "Aaron the Priest". He was a prophet and the first High Priest of the Israelites. His ceremonial breastplate is said to be the origin of birthstones; the plate held four rows of three precious stones, symbolizing the 12 months of the year and the 12 signs of the zodiac.

The Romans started celebrating birth and birthdays and it was believed they celebrated using flowers. Seasonal flowers weren't just used for decorating, but they were also taken as gifts and therefore were credited with creating the tradition of birth flowers.
