September

The birthstone for September is sapphire or lapis lazuli, the birthflower is the aster

Sapphire

The word “sapphire” has its roots in several ancient languages: the Arabic “safir,” the Latin “sapphirus” (meaning “blue”), and the Greek word “sappheiros” for the island of Sappherine in the Arabian Seam where sapphires were found in ancient Grecian times.

The sapphire is a relative of the ruby: it is a form of the mineral corundum, red corundum is called the ruby, while all other gem quality forms of corundum are called sapphires.

The sapphire was said to represent the purity of the soul.

Lapis lazuli

Lapis lazuli is a blue rock containing lazurite, calcite and pyrite. It has been used to make beads, gemstones and inlay for thousands of years. It is a universal symbol of wisdom and truth. Its name comes from the Latin lapis, "stone," and the Persian lazhuward, "blue."

It symbolises affection, connection, fidelity and mental strength.

Aster

Like many flowers, the aster has the same scientific name as its common name. It came from the Greek word for “star” to describe the star-like flowers. Asters are a genus of flowers from the Asteraceae family. It includes about 180 species of flowering plants. All asters produce clusters of tiny daisy-like flowers.

They symbolise patience, love of variety, elegance and daintiness.
